ACCRA, Oct 10 (The African Portal) — Business leader Alex Apau-Danquah has called for stronger partnerships between the private sector and the media to promote responsible journalism and national development as Ghana prepares for its 29th annual media awards.

Apau-Danquah, Executive Chairman of the KGL Group, said responsible journalism was vital to nurturing entrepreneurship and sustaining economic growth.

“Journalism at its core was never meant to harm, but to heal — not to sensationalise, but to illuminate and strengthen the fabric of our nation,” he said at the launch of the 29th Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Media Awards in Accra.

He reaffirmed KGL Group’s commitment to supporting the media and said Ghana must celebrate “the visionaries who invest, innovate and create opportunities for our people.”

The GJA announced that this year’s awards will, for the first time, be held outside the capital, Accra. The ceremony will take place on November 8 at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi under the patronage of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

Themed “Safeguarding Ghana’s Future: The Role of the Media in Promoting Peace, Security and the Fight Against Galamsey,” the awards aim to highlight journalism’s role in advancing national stability and environmental protection.

Information Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu commended the GJA for maintaining what he described as “the country’s most anticipated celebration of excellence in journalism.”

He urged media professionals to adapt to technological change and artificial intelligence while maintaining ethical standards.

GJA President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour said the decision to host the event in Kumasi symbolised renewal and inclusivity, adding that more than 500 journalists from across the country would be supported to attend.

The three-day celebration will open on November 7 with a welcome reception and general meeting, followed by a health walk and the awards gala, capped by a royal dinner hosted by the Asantehene.
