Accra, Oct 10 (The African Portal) – A 30-year-old Nigerian national has been sentenced to two years in prison in Ghana for unlawful entry, obstructing justice, and involvement in cybercrime activities, the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has said.
In a statement issued on Friday, the GIS said Jacob Sunday was arrested during a routine compliance operation at Kasoa Ofaakor in the Central Region on 28 August.
According to the Service, Sunday drew a cutlass and threatened immigration officers during his arrest. Investigations later revealed that he had entered Ghana through an unapproved route and had facilitated the illegal entry of two other Nigerian nationals, all allegedly involved in internet fraud.
The Madina District Court subsequently convicted and sentenced him to 24 months’ imprisonment.
The GIS reiterated its commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s borders and enforcing immigration laws. It also cautioned landlords and property owners to verify the immigration status of foreign tenants, warning that harbouring undocumented migrants is an offence under Section 52(1)(b) of the Immigration Act, 2000 (Act 573).
The Service urged the public to report suspicious immigration-related activities to the nearest immigration office.
The statement was signed by Deputy Commissioner of Immigration Maud Anima Quainoo, Head of the Public Affairs Department.
