ACCRA, Sept 11 (The African Portal) – For most people, comedy is simply for fun; it makes people laugh. For many years, consumers of comedy shows or proframmes have rarely gone beyond the laughter that comedy brings. However, comedy is not just about laughter; it is also used by its creators as a tool for change and, sometimes, as a political instrument to react to and address national issues.
As a branch of the literary arts, comedy is a powerful tool in the hands of its creators. For instance, many writers have used comedy to mock the political systems of their time. Notable examples include the popular novel Animal Farm, Gulliver’s Travels, The Blinkards, and Wizard of the Crow. The authors of these influential literary works hid behind humour and satire to deliver strong messages to their audiences and those messages were well understood.
In recent times, however, most comedians tend to focus mainly on the entertainment and laughter side of comedy, without necessarily using it as a means to correct the ills of society. Although a few still employ comedy to draw attention to societal problems, they remain in the minority.
In Nigeria, for example, there is a comic character called Kevinblack, who performs under the stage name Governor Amuneke. Through his acts, Governor Amuneke mocks how politicians often take their citizens and electorate for granted, clearly highlighting the tricks they use to deceive the public.
As I stated earlier, not many comedians today use their platforms to highlight societal issues while also entertaining their audiences.
In Ghana, however, there is a young man in entertainment circles known as GH Poki. This comedian seems to understand the power of satire and has been using his platform as a tool to mock political actors and activists.
He employs his satirical comedy to advise political leaders on issues he believes deserve national attention or critical introspection. Typically, he comically pretends to call the person he wants to address on the phone, mimicking everyday phone conversations. Once he “reaches” the person, he goes ahead to deliver the message or advice he wants to share.
As humorous as his content may seem, GH Poki delivers his messages clearly and effectively. His advice is not limited to political actors alone; at times, he also addresses his fellow creatives and others in the entertainment industry.
Although some people may not appreciate his art which is normal and acceptable in any society, he appears unfazed by criticism. Instead, he remains focused on delivering his message loudly and clearly to whomever he feels needs his advice or response, whether on national or personal issues.
His admonitions, therefore, extend beyond politicians and public figures to include his colleagues in the entertainment business.
Creative content creators must look beyond the immediate appeal of their acts and consider how best they can use their creativity to positively influence society. Who knows, your content might prick the conscience of a duty bearer and inspire action that benefits the larger society that follows you or watches your work.
