Administrator of the Ghana Sports Fund, Dr David Kofi Wuaku, says Ghana’s sports sector is gradually gaining momentum, creating an opportunity for the country to begin a new chapter in the development of the industry.

He believes the growing sporting activities should be accompanied by stronger leadership, investment and deliberate efforts to ensure that the sector delivers sustainable opportunities for Ghanaians.

Dr Wuaku made the observation during the 2026 Democracy Cup in Kumasi.

“Sports is gradually picking up,” he said, describing the development as an opportunity for everybody to earn their leadership.

His comments point to the growing need for stakeholders to move beyond isolated sporting events and focus on building an industry supported by strong institutions, sustainable financing and professional management.

Ghana has long struggled with challenges including inadequate funding, infrastructure gaps and limited opportunities for athletes and other sports professionals.

Dr Wuaku believes the current momentum offers an opportunity to address some of these challenges and create a more sustainable future for Ghanaian sports.

He said everyone within the sports ecosystem has a role to play, including government, the private sector, sporting associations, athletes, administrators, the media and fans.

The Ghana Sports Fund, established under Act 1159, is expected to become a major vehicle for mobilising and managing resources for sports development.

The Fund’s broader mandate creates an opportunity to explore new approaches to financing and supporting sporting activities across the country.

Dr Wuaku said leadership would be critical to ensuring that the renewed interest in sports is translated into meaningful and lasting progress.

For him, Ghana cannot afford to allow the current momentum to fade.

The task, he suggested, is to turn the growing enthusiasm around sports into stronger institutions, better opportunities and a sports industry capable of contributing significantly to Ghana’s social and economic development.
