BANJUL, Nov 11 (The African Portal) – The Gambia Maritime Administration (GMA) has taken decisive steps to reinforce its regulatory oversight by deregistering seventy-two (72) ships from The Gambia Ship Register. The exercise forms part of GMA’s ongoing efforts to safeguard the integrity and credibility of The Gambia’s International Ship Registry.
In the course of its review, the Administration uncovered instances where certain vessels were found in possession of fraudulent certificates falsely claiming to have been issued by GMA. The Administration wishes to remind all stakeholders that the authenticity of any certificate purportedly issued by the GMA must be verified directly with the Administration.
GMA therefore urges all ship owners and operators to engage directly with the Administration on matters relating to ship registration and certification, and to avoid dealing with unauthorized intermediaries who may attempt to falsify documents for financial gain. The public is reminded that falsification of official documents constitutes a criminal offence under Gambian law, and offenders will be prosecuted accordingly.
Furthermore, the Administration requests that Port State Control (PSC) Officers worldwide, upon the arrival of any vessel flying The Gambia flag, contact the GMA to verify the validity of the vessel’s Certificate of Registry and other statutory documents. This measure is essential to ensuring compliance with international maritime standards and preventing the circulation of falsified documents.
As part of its reform measures, GMA has imposed a moratorium on the registration of new ships under The Gambia flag until the end of December 2025. The Administration will continue to update stakeholders and the general public on further developments in due course.
