ACCRA, Oct 21 (The African Portal) – Ten Ghanaian lawmakers on Monday reintroduced the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025, commonly known as the anti-LGBT+ bill, for its first reading in Parliament.

The private member’s bill, sponsored by legislators including John Ntim Fordjour, Samuel Nartey George and Helen Adjoa Ntoso, seeks to impose strict penalties on same-sex relationships, public displays of affection, and the promotion of LGBTQ+ content. It also proposes to ban transgender healthcare, dissolve LGBTQ+ organisations and criminalise financial or moral support for such groups.

A similar bill was approved by Parliament in February 2024 but lapsed following the dissolution of the previous legislature before it could be signed into law by then-President Nana Akufo-Addo. The sponsors have now reintroduced it, restarting the legislative process.

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed support for the bill’s intent but said any such legislation should be introduced by the government rather than through a private member’s initiative.

If enacted, the law would significantly expand Ghana’s existing restrictions on LGBTQ+ activities and impose tougher penalties on individuals and organisations in breach of its provisions.
