ABUJA, Sept 29 (The African Portal) – Nigeria’s Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has given the government 14 days to meet its demands or face strike action, the union said on Sunday.
The decision followed a National Executive Council meeting held at the University of Abuja, ASUU president Chris Piwuna said in a statement.
“The union decried the neglect of the university system and the government’s consistent refusal to heed to its demands,” Piwuna said. If the issues are not resolved within two weeks, he added, ASUU would begin a two-week warning strike, followed by an indefinite shutdown.

The union’s demands include the renegotiation of a 2009 agreement with the government, improved funding for universities, settlement of salary arrears, and a sustainable financing mechanism for higher education.
The education ministry last year set up a committee, led by permanent secretary Abel Enitan, to review ASUU’s proposals, but no outcome has yet been made public.
