ACCRA, Sept 15 (The African Portal) – The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has launched a full investigation into the arrest of an alleged Burkinabe national at Hamile in the Upper West Region, an incident that sparked unrest in the border town.

In a statement issued on Monday, September 15, and signed by its Head of Public Affairs, Assistant Commissioner of Immigration Amoako-Atta, the Service said: “Appropriate measures will be taken following the outcome of the investigations.”

The statement added that Comptroller-General of Immigration, Mr. Samuel Basintale Arnaud, had ordered the inquiry.

“The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has noted with concern an incident that occurred at the Hamile Border Post in the Upper West Region on the evening of Saturday, 13th September 2025, which resulted in disturbances involving some members of the local community,” the Service noted.

Tensions flared after irate youth accused immigration officers of misconduct. The protesters alleged that an officer had facilitated the entry of armed men from Burkina Faso into Ghana and had wrongfully arrested a Burkinabe woman, who had been living in Côte d’Ivoire due to unrest in her country, before attempting to repatriate her.

Witnesses claimed the woman was forcibly placed into one of two vehicles used by immigration officers while on her way to Nandom to visit a relative.

Security has since been reinforced in Hamile, with authorities maintaining heightened vigilance as tensions remain high.
