ACCRA, Sept 12 (The African Portal) -A 22-year-old Utah resident, Tyler Robinson, has been identified by US authorities as a suspect in the assassination of Charlie Kirk.
The suspect’s father recognized his son from photos that had been released, according to a source.
The FBI said Robinson’s own father, with the help of a minister, convinced him to turn himself in after family recognized him from FBI images.
“The killer then confessed to his father, who is a 27-year veteran of the Washington County Sheriff’s Department,” US authorities have said.
His father is said to have then contacted authorities and secured his son before he could be taken into custody.
Robinson was arrested in St. George, Utah — 250 miles from the campus where Kirk was killed during a debate. Utah Governor Spencer Cox confirmed the state will pursue the death penalty, calling it one of the most high-profile cases Utah has faced in decades.
Utah’s governor said a family member told investigators that Tyler Robinson, the suspect in the killing of Charlie Kirk, had spoken negatively about the victim prior to the shooting.
Kirk’s killer eluded police and federal agents for more than 24 hours after Wednesday’s shooting, in which a sniper fired a single gunshot that killed Kirk during an appearance at Utah Valley University in Orem.
“I think we have him,” Trump told Fox News in an interview, adding that a person who knows the suspect had turned him in.
After US conservative youth activist Charlie Kirk was assassinated on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, there was wall-to-wall media coverage with journalists and commentators offering condolences in raw, on-air reactions. Many were heartfelt, some were angry.
Kirk, 31, co-founder of the conservative political advocacy group Turning Point USA and a staunch ally of President Donald Trump, was shot at long range during a campus event in Orem, Utah on Wednesday. Trump said on Friday that a suspect had been taken into custody.
