Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of Ghana’s opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after being convicted on illegal mining-related offences.

The Accra High Court on Monday found Mr Boasiako and his company, Akonta Mining Limited, guilty on six counts, including assigning mineral rights without the approval of the Minister responsible for Lands and Natural Resources and facilitating an unlicensed mining operation.

The court subsequently sentenced Mr Boasiako to 20 years’ imprisonment.

The case relates to activities at a mining concession in Samreboi.
