The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMET) has issued a weather warning as a slow-moving rainstorm sighted off the coast of Benin moves westwards, expected to bring thunderstorms and rain to parts of Southern Ghana and portions of the middle belt.
According to the agency’s impact-based weather update, the storm is anticipated to produce slight to moderate thunderstorms with rain for parts of the Volta, Greater Accra, Eastern, and Central regions this morning through to the afternoon hours.
The storm will then trigger rain-bearing clouds and produce thunderstorms or rain over Ashanti, Bono, Ahafo, and Western North regions later in the day.
The public has been urged to remain alert to the risk of fallen trees, loose electrical cables, damaged utility poles, and other storm-related hazards. Slight to moderate winds may accompany the thunderstorms, and visibility is expected to reduce, ranging between 6,000 metres and 10,000 metres.
Motorists have been advised to drive with caution, reduce speed, and use headlights where necessary, while pedestrians are cautioned not to walk through flooded areas. Localised flash flooding is possible, particularly in low-lying and poorly drained areas.
The areas expected to be affected include Greater Accra, Volta, Central, and Eastern regions from 8:30 am to 2:00 pm, with Western, Ashanti, Ahafo, Western North, and Bono regions expected to experience conditions from 10:30 am to 4:00 pm.
The Ghana Meteorological Agency has advised the public to keep themselves updated with official forecasts and alerts. Residents in flood-prone areas have been urged to take necessary precautions and plan their journeys carefully.
