The Community Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has dismissed claims by former Ghanaian Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo that her suspension and subsequent removal from office violated her human rights.

In a judgment delivered on Wednesday, the court ruled that the Ghanaian state had not breached Justice Torkornoo’s rights to a fair hearing, dignity, information or work as protected under the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

The court therefore dismissed all the reliefs sought by the former Chief Justice, including her request for reinstatement and compensation of $10m (£7.3m) for alleged moral and reputational harm.

Ghana’s deputy Attorney General Justice Sai shared snippets of the ruling on his social media page.
