Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico’s planned trip to Moscow to attend Victory Day events has highlighted divisions within the European Union over relations with Russia, The European Conservative reported.

The publication notes that European countries are divided over whether to allow the Slovak prime minister’s plane to pass through their airspace, indicating that EU members have yet to agree on a unified approach toward Russia.

Fico previously said he plans to lay flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on May 9 and hopes to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The prime minister is traveling to Moscow to pay tribute to Red Army soldiers who died fighting Nazi Germany to liberate Slovakia.

According to Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov, Putin will hold a series of bilateral meetings on Victory Day. Pavel Zarubin, a reporter for Vesti, said that the Russian president is expected to meet with Fico and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, who are scheduled to arrive in Moscow.
