ACCRA, Dec 17 (The African Portal) – Ghana will require motorists to present the national identity card, known as the Ghana Card, to purchase or renew motor insurance policies from Jan. 1, 2026, the country’s insurance regulator said.
In a public notice, the National Insurance Commission (NIC) said the requirement will apply to all motorists nationwide, while corporate clients will also be required to provide their Tax Identification Number (TIN) when completing motor insurance transactions.
“The National Insurance Commission (NIC) wishes to inform all motorists that effective January 1, 2026, the Ghana Card would become a mandatory requirement when purchasing or renewing any motor insurance policy,” the notice said. It added that “corporate clients are also required to provide their Tax Identification Number (TIN) when completing motor insurance transactions.”
The regulator said the measure is aimed at strengthening identity verification and improving the efficiency and integrity of insurance operations.
According to the NIC, the policy is expected to improve claims handling, strengthen Know-Your-Customer and anti-money laundering compliance, reduce fraud and align Ghana’s insurance sector with global financial services standards.
The Commission urged motorists to present their Ghana Card at all motor insurance sales outlets, while corporate customers were advised to ensure their TIN details are available to avoid delays.
The NIC said the directive forms part of broader reforms to enhance transparency, protect policyholders and modernise the insurance industry.
The notice was signed by the acting Commissioner of Insurance, Dr Abiba Zakariah.
