Organised by a consortium of prominent pan-African institutions, the awards aim to amplify African voices, elevate homegrown narratives and strengthen the continent’s presence in the global media landscape.

The awards will have nine categories, with each reflecting traditional and emergent media formats.

The categories include outstanding news report, outstanding interview, outstanding documentary, outstanding current affairs programme, outstanding afro-centric entertainment, outstanding video production, outstanding social media video, outstanding social media video on current affairs and outstanding short social media video.

The awards are open to media organisations, television channels, bloggers and independent content creators across Africa.

“All entries must have first aired in 2024 or later and submissions must meet category-specific criteria and respect running time limits,” the statement released on Friday reads.

The nominees will each receive a N$36 000 cash prize with hotel and plane tickets fully paid, while the winners of each category will take home a total of N$108 000.

“The top three entries in each category will be invited to the gala ceremony in Addis Ababa, with travel and hotel accommodation fully covered by the organisers,” the statement reads.

Winners will receive the prestigious Golden Alkebulan trophy, underscoring the pan-African heritage and ambition of the awards. Deadline for submissions is on 4 November.

The African media awards celebrate the work and creativity of journalists across Africa. It aims to share African voices with the world, connecting the continent’s history of fighting for freedom with today’s efforts to be seen and heard. The awards honour not only great journalism but also the power of Africans telling their own stories.
