ACCRA, Oct 14 (The African Portal) – Rev. Father Andrew Campbell has launched a GH¢1 million fund to build a dining hall and kitchen for the Weija Leprosarium, ahead of his 80th birthday celebration in March next year.

Dubbed the Fr Campbell at 80 Birthday Celebration Project, the initiative aims to provide at least two meals each day for residents of the leprosarium.

Former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who serves as patron of the facility, unveiled the logo for the fund in Accra on Monday. The event also marked 54 years since Rev. Fr Campbell first arrived in Ghana to serve as a priest.

The ceremony was jointly chaired by the Omanhene of the Asante Juaben Traditional Area, Nana Appiagyei Dankawoso I, and the Executive Director of Salt and Light Ministries, Dr Joyce Aryee.

Dr Bawumia commended Rev. Fr Campbell for his decades of service to marginalised and vulnerable communities, describing his efforts as an inspiration to the nation.

He said the core purpose of human existence lay in helping others, echoing the biblical commandment to “Love thy neighbour as yourself.”

The former Vice-President urged individuals and organisations to contribute to the fund to help bring smiles to the faces of the beneficiaries.

In a speech read on her behalf by Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Administration, Michael Sumaila, Nana Oye Bampoe Addo praised Rev. Fr Campbell for his dedication to serving people afflicted by leprosy and other marginalised groups.

“He has shown us what it means to be Christ-like, carrying the weight of responsibility with dignity,” she said.

She also urged the public to recognise Rev. Fr Campbell’s contribution to social justice and his role in bringing hope to the hopeless.
