ACCRA, Oct 13 (The African Portal) – Police in Ghana’s Eastern South Region have arrested two people accused of plotting to assassinate the Chief of Akyem Kwabeng, Daasebre Ayimadu Kantamanto II, who also serves as the Gyasehene of the Akyem Abuakwa State.
The suspects, identified as 47-year-old Emelia Akua Asor and 48-year-old Seth Butuakwa, were detained after intelligence officers reportedly infiltrated the group behind the alleged plot.
According to the police, the pair allegedly offered GH¢50,000 to hire hitmen for the assassination and promised to pay another GH¢50,000 after the job was completed.
The operation was foiled following a tip-off received by the Regional Police Command on Saturday morning, suggesting a plan to kill the chief ahead of his first royal durbar scheduled for Friday at Akyem Kwabeng.
In a statement, police said undercover officers from the Regional Police Intelligence Directorate met the suspects during a covert operation on Sunday, 12 October 2025.
“Suspect Emelia Akua Asor offered GH¢50,000 to the officers to carry out the assassination of both the chief and another woman, said to be the newly appointed queenmother of Akyem Kwabeng,” the statement said.
Investigators added that Butuakwa later led the officers to identify the residences of both targets and handed them a photograph of the chief.
The two suspects were subsequently arrested and are currently in police custody assisting with investigations.
Police say further updates will be provided as the case progresses.
