ACCRA, Oct 8 (The African Portal) – Police in Ghana’s Upper East Region have launched a manhunt for a commercial tricycle rider accused of assaulting a police officer during a stop-and-search operation at Garu.
The incident occurred on Monday, 6 October 2025, when a police team working with Community Protection Assistants (CPAs) set up a checkpoint along the Garu–Nakpanduri road.
According to a statement from the Regional Police Command, the tricycle — loaded with sacks of groundnuts and carrying passengers on top of the goods — was stopped for inspection. When the rider was instructed to park properly, he allegedly became aggressive, attacked an officer, and fled the scene.
Chief Inspector Abdul-Rahman Sumalia, who speaks for the police in the region, said investigations were underway and efforts were being made to arrest the suspect.
“The Command is making every effort to arrest the tricycle rider and ensure he faces the full rigours of the law,” the statement said.
Police have urged residents of Garu and nearby communities to provide information that could help locate the suspect.
The Upper East Regional Police Command has recently stepped up enforcement of road safety regulations, particularly targeting commercial tricycle operators, commonly known as “aboboyaa” or “pragyia” riders.
