ABUJA Sept 29 (The African Portal) – Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup received a lift on Monday after FIFA deducted three points from South Africa for fielding an ineligible player.
The world governing body said South Africa’s Teboho Mokoena should not have featured in their qualifier against Lesotho in March. In addition to the points penalty, Bafana Bafana have also had three goals struck from their tally.
The sanction leaves Nigeria’s Super Eagles better placed in the race to secure a spot at the expanded 48-team tournament, which will be staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
