ACCRA, Sept 26 (The African Portal) – Over 220 licensed radio stations in Ghana are not currently broadcasting, the National Communications Authority (NCA) said on Friday, raising questions about sustainability in the country’s media sector.

Out of 763 authorised FM stations nationwide, only 539 are on air, while 224 have either not started operations or gone off air, said Bernard Amissah-Ocran, the NCA’s acting director of engineering.

He was speaking at the “Broadcasting at the Crossroads” forum organised by the Africa Media Bureau in Accra.

According to the regulator’s second-quarter 2025 report, the Ashanti Region has the highest number of authorised FM stations at 116, with 85 operational and 31 inactive. The Western Region follows with 88 licensed stations, 59 of which are on air.

The report also breaks down stations by category: 31 public, 155 community, 5 campus, 548 commercial, and 24 foreign-authorised stations.
