In a significant move to bolster the global campaign for justice and redress, a high-level delegation from the Pan-African Association of Lawyers (PALU) paid a courtesy call on Dr. Ekoww Spio-Garbrah, Ghana’s Special Envoy for Reparations, at his office in the Osu Castle, Accra on Friday 6th February,2026.
The meeting, described by both parties as “strategic and collaborative,” focused on aligning legal expertise with diplomatic efforts to advance the cause of reparations for historical injustices and the enduring legacies of the transatlantic slave trade.
The PALU delegation, led by it’s Chief Executive Officer Mr. Donald Deya and accompanied by Miss Ruth Osaritin, the organization’s Research and Publication Officer, conveyed the association’s firm commitment to the reparations agenda. They expressed a keen interest in exploring concrete avenues for partnership with the Envoy’s office.
“We are here to offer our robust pan-African network of legal minds and our technical expertise,” stated Mr. Deya following the closed-door discussions. “The quest for reparations is, at its core, a quest for justice, and it requires meticulous legal strategy, evidence-based advocacy, and unified action across the continent and its diaspora. PALU stands ready to collaborate.”
In his remarks, Dr. Spio Garbrah welcomed the pledge of support, underscoring the critical importance of pan-African solidarity in the complex, multi-generational pursuit of reparative justice. He briefed the delegation on the ongoing progress of national and continental initiatives, highlighting Ghana’s leadership role in anchoring the discourse within frameworks of diplomacy, historical acknowledgment, and sustainable development.
“The moral arc of the universe bends toward justice, but it needs a steady hand to guide it,” Dr. Spio Garbrah said. “The partnership with esteemed institutions like PALU provides that necessary heft. Our combined efforts in research, legal advocacy, and coalition-building are essential to translating the principles of reparations into tangible outcomes.”
Analysts view this collaboration as a potent fusion of legal clout and diplomatic channels. PALU, as the premier umbrella body for African lawyers and lawyers’ associations on the continent and in the diaspora, brings substantial grassroots and institutional legal weight. The office of the Special Envoy, inaugurated by President John Dramami Mahama, operates at the strategic diplomatic level, engaging with governments, international bodies, and global stakeholders.
The meeting concluded with a mutual agreement to formalize a framework for cooperation. Expected collaborative fronts include joint research publications, the development of legal models for reparations, the organization of expert symposia, and coordinated advocacy at continental forums such as the African Union and international platforms like the United Nations.
This alliance marks a concerted step forward in the growing, organized movement seeking redress, as the call for reparations gains unprecedented momentum on the global stage.
