ACCRA, Dec 18 (The African Portal) – Ghana’s Attorney-General and Minister for Justice has confirmed that the government has formally requested the extradition of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta and Ernest Darko Akore from the United States to face corruption-related charges.
Dominic Ayine made the announcement on Thursday during the Government Accountability Series, saying the request followed the submission of all required documentation by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP). He said the two men are expected to answer to a total of 78 alleged corruption and corruption-related offences.
Mr Ayine said his office had completed its part of the process by transmitting the extradition request to US authorities after receiving clarifications from the OSP.
“The matter is now before the United States judicial authorities to determine whether the legal threshold for extradition has been met,” he said.
He added that the government remained committed to accountability and due process, and would continue to cooperate with international partners while observing the legal requirements governing extradition under both Ghanaian and US law.
