ACCRA, Nov 24 (The African Portal) – A staff member of Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) has petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to trigger the removal of EC Chairperson Jean Mensa and her two deputies, alleging misconduct that he says undermines the credibility of the country’s electoral system.
In a statement on Monday, Joseph Blankson Adumadzie said the petition was filed under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution, which sets out the process for removing heads of independent constitutional bodies.
Adumadzie declined to disclose the specifics of the filing, citing legal restrictions, but said it is based on 12 counts of stated misbehaviour, including alleged cronyism, abuse of office and gross incompetence. He said the conduct of the three officials has eroded public confidence in the commission and threatens the integrity and independence of Ghana’s elections.
He said his petition is motivated by a desire to safeguard the constitution and uphold accountable governance, adding that protecting the dignity of the EC is essential to sustaining public trust in the democratic process.
Adumadzie called on Mahama to fulfil his constitutional obligation by referring the petition to the Chief Justice to determine whether a prima facie case exists, as required under Article 146.
