ACCRA, Nov 6 (The African Portal) – Ghana will hold a state funeral for former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings on Nov. 28 at Independence Square in Accra, the government said on Thursday.
The ceremony, organised under the auspices of President John Mahama, will honour Agyeman-Rawlings for her contributions to women’s and children’s rights and to national development, the presidency said in a statement signed by Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu.
Agyeman-Rawlings, 76, died on Oct. 23 at the Ridge Hospital in Accra. Her death prompted tributes from political leaders, civil society groups and citizens who hailed her as a pioneer of women’s empowerment in Ghana.
Parliament suspended its sitting in her honour after the announcement of her death. Her family has requested privacy during the mourning period.
