ACCRA, Oct 29 (The African Portal) – Ghana’s Comptroller-General of Immigration, Samuel Basintale Amadu, has urged officers stationed along the country’s borders to remain committed to their duties despite operational challenges, saying their work is crucial to national security.
The Immigration Chief made the call at the end of a two-day working visit to the North East Region following an attack on two immigration officers at the Gbintri Inland Checkpoint that left one dead and another injured.
Assistant Immigration Control Officer II Rafiq Mohammed was killed in the attack, while AICO II Oppong Daniel was injured and is receiving treatment, the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) said in a statement signed by Deputy Commissioner of Immigration Maud Anima Quainoo.
Amadu met officers during the visit to assess their operational challenges and discuss ways to improve safety and prevent future incidents. He urged personnel to uphold the service’s core values of professionalism, integrity and discipline.
The statement said the government, through the Ministry of the Interior and GIS leadership, was working to strengthen border security infrastructure and upgrade equipment to enhance safety and efficiency.
It added that approval had been granted for the construction of regional headquarters, including a new national headquarters, to address inadequate office space.
Amadu also said the service was finalising a memorandum of understanding with regional hospitals to provide healthcare for officers and encouraged personnel to register with the National Health Insurance Scheme.
During his tour, Amadu met traditional and regional leaders, including the Mamprugu King, His Royal Majesty Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga, and the North East Regional Minister, Abrahim Tia, and called for stronger collaboration in maintaining national security.
