In a statement signed by the UN Resident Coordinator, Zia Choudhury, the organisation said Mrs Rawlings, who passed away on 23 October 2025, reshaped Ghana’s national discourse on gender equity in the early 1990s and left a lasting mark on the global movement for women’s rights.

It highlighted her leadership at the 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, where she championed African perspectives on gender and development, helping to elevate women’s rights issues across the continent.

The statement added that her legacy continues through the work of the 31st December Women’s Movement, her historic presidential bid, and her enduring influence on generations of Ghanaian women and girls.

“The United Nations in Ghana extends its deepest condolences to her family, loved ones, and all who mourn this profound loss,” Mr Choudhury said. “May her memory continue to inspire those who carry forward the cause she so passionately advanced.”
