TAMALE, Oct 20 (The African Portal) – The Tamale Film and Television Academy (TAFTA) has received the Award for Excellence in Broadcast and Media Education at the 2nd Northern Ghana Business Merit Awards (NOBMA), recognising its role in developing media talent in the region.
The ceremony, held on October 17, brought together government officials, academics and business leaders to celebrate institutions and individuals driving economic growth in northern Ghana.
Organised by the Business Executive Media Group, the awards aim to highlight outstanding performance in the Northern, North East, Savannah, Upper East and Upper West regions, under the 2025 theme “Identifying the Gatekeepers of Business in Northern Ghana.”
TAFTA’s award acknowledges more than a decade of work training young people in video production and storytelling. The academy has become a key source of skilled professionals for Ghana’s growing creative sector.
Speaking after receiving the award, TAFTA Chief Executive Officer Alhassan Abdul Washeed called on the government and private investors to support the northern film industry, which he said has “organic storylines” with global potential.
He urged stakeholders to “invest in creative knowledge,” noting that many filmmakers in the region lack the technical skills to translate strong scripts into professional productions.
“This award is a validation of our work, but the real potential lies ahead,” Washeed said. “We are empowering Northern Ghana’s next generation of storytellers through hands-on training that turns learners into creators.”
TAFTA’s practical training model allows students to produce television programmes, mini-series and documentaries broadcast on national networks. Graduates have gone on to work with major media houses, NGOs and international programmes, including the Canon Development Programme.
The academy said it plans to expand operations and is seeking partnerships and investment to scale up production and training initiatives.
The Northern Ghana Business Merit Awards, now in its second year, were established to address the concentration of recognition and opportunities in Ghana’s southern regions and to promote investment and entrepreneurship in the north.
