ACCRA. Oct 20 (The African Portal) – Ghana’s Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has rejected claims that it is refusing to cooperate with the Attorney-General’s Department in efforts to extradite former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to face criminal charges.
The OSP had earlier placed Ofori-Atta on a wanted list and requested an Interpol Red Notice for his arrest over alleged involvement in several corruption investigations.
Ofori-Atta, who reportedly left Ghana last year, has failed to return despite multiple assurances to the authorities.
In January 2025, the OSP named him as a suspect in corruption-related cases linked to contracts with Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML), expenditure on the National Cathedral project, and irregularities in health and tax refund operations.
He was declared a “fugitive from justice” the following month after repeatedly ignoring summonses from the OSP. His lawyers later sought to have his name removed from the wanted list, promising he would return to assist with investigations.
However, in June 2025, after he again failed to appear, the OSP reinstated his fugitive status and confirmed plans to proceed with extradition efforts through Interpol.
Ten months on, Ofori-Atta has not been arrested abroad or voluntarily returned to Ghana, prompting reports that the OSP was not cooperating with the Attorney-General’s office on the extradition process.
Sources close to the OSP have dismissed the allegations, insisting the matter “is receiving the necessary attention.”
