ACCRA, Oct 18 (The African Portal) — African Media Globe (AMG) has called on African governments and the African Union (AU) to take stronger action to address poverty and inequality across the continent, as the world marks the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty on Friday.

In a statement issued by Secretary-General Charles Sylvanus Boye, AMG said poverty in Africa stems from “deep-rooted structural and systemic injustices,” not just a lack of resources.

The group urged the AU and national governments to dismantle economic and governance systems that perpetuate dependency, corruption, and inequitable access to opportunities.

“Africa’s poverty is not natural; it is man-made and sustained by systems that deny citizens the benefits of their own wealth,” said AMG President Shirley Asiedu-Addo.

She called on the AU to lead a continent-wide discussion on justice, equity, and resource management to ensure Africa’s wealth benefits its citizens rather than external interests.

The network also urged African leaders to harness the continent’s natural, human, and creative resources to generate employment, empower youth and women, and strengthen local industries. Investment in education, innovation, and social protection, it said, would help build resilient economies that leave no one behind.

AMG, an alliance of media professionals across Africa, reaffirmed its commitment to using journalism to promote accountability and amplify the voices of marginalized communities.

“The time has come for Africa to write its own story — one where poverty is not a destiny but a chapter we have the power to close,” the statement said.
