ADDIS ABABA, Oct 15 (The African Portal) – The African Union Commission (AUC) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, describing him as a “towering figure” in African politics and a champion of democracy and good governance.
In a statement on Wednesday, AUC Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf extended condolences to Odinga’s family, the government and people of Kenya, and the wider African community.
“Raila Odinga was a steadfast champion of democracy, good governance, and people-centered development,” Youssouf said. “His decades-long commitment to justice, pluralism, and democratic reform left an indelible mark not only on Kenya but across the African continent.”
Odinga, who served as Kenya’s prime minister from 2008 to 2013, was also the African Union’s High Representative for Infrastructure Development, where he worked to advance the continent’s connectivity and integration agenda.
Youssouf said Odinga’s efforts helped lay the groundwork for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and broader socio-economic transformation.
“Africa has lost one of its most visionary sons; a leader who dedicated his life to the pursuit of justice, democracy, and unity,” Youssouf said. “His legacy will continue to inspire our collective efforts to build a peaceful, prosperous, and democratic Africa.”
The AU said it joined Kenyans and Africans across the continent in celebrating Odinga’s life and service.
