ACCRA, Oct 13 (The African Portal) – Ghana’s Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, says the government has secured financial clearance to settle outstanding salaries and allowances owed to thousands of health workers across the country.
Speaking at a news conference in Accra on Monday, Mr Akandoh said clearance had been granted for the payment of 17,909 nurses, midwives and allied health interns who began their national service earlier this year.
He added that the Ministry of Finance had also approved financial clearance for 13,500 nurses and midwives who were recruited and posted in late 2024. The initial clearance for this group, due to expire at the end of December 2024, has now been renewed to ensure full payment, he said.
“The Ministry of Health has secured financial clearance for the payment of 17,909 nurses, midwives and allied health interns who started their national service in early 2024, and for 13,500 nurses and midwives recruited late last year,” Mr Akandoh told reporters.
He assured the affected workers that the government remained committed to clearing all arrears and strengthening administrative systems to prevent future salary delays.
“The Ministry is implementing measures as part of a broader plan to strengthen Ghana’s health system and improve the welfare of its workforce,” he said.
Mr Akandoh also appealed to health workers to remain calm and continue to perform their duties while unresolved cases are addressed through the appropriate channels.
