ACCRA, Oct 13 (The African Portal) – Ghana have secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a 1–0 win over Comoros at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday night.
Mohammed Kudus scored the only goal two minutes into the second half to send the Black Stars to the top of Group I, sealing their place in the tournament to be hosted jointly by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The Tottenham midfielder struck from close range after Comoros failed to clear a goalmouth scramble, prompting loud celebrations from the packed home crowd.
The victory ensured Ghana finished with 25 points from 10 matches, ahead of Madagascar, who ended second with 19 points despite losing 4–1 to Mali in Bamako.
It will be Ghana’s fifth appearance at the World Cup and their first since 2022. Their best performance came in 2010, when they reached the quarter-finals in South Africa before losing to Uruguay on penalties.
The win also carried symbolic significance, coming two years after Comoros stunned Ghana in the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations, eliminating them in the group stage.
The result is a major boost for coach Otto Addo, who had faced mounting criticism after Ghana’s poor run in the 2025 AFCON qualifying campaign.
Ghana join Algeria, Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia as Africa’s confirmed representatives for the 2026 World Cup. The remaining four automatic slots will be decided in the final round of qualifiers on Monday and Tuesday.
