ACCRA, Oct 6 (The African Portal) – Ghana’s former Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, reported to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Monday following a petition accusing him of fabricating evidence in a high-profile corruption trial.
The petition was filed by Richard Jakpa, a Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat, who was a co-accused in the ambulance procurement case that also involved the current Minister for Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson.
In a letter dated 23 September and addressed to the CID Director-General, Mr Jakpa alleged that during the trial, Mr Dame attempted to influence his testimony to incriminate Dr Forson.
He claimed the then-Attorney-General urged him to testify in what he described as a “dishonest, wicked and unconscionable” manner and to obtain a false medical excuse to mislead the court.
According to the petition, Mr Jakpa said Mr Dame phoned him on 26 March 2024, ahead of a court appearance, suggesting he adjust his testimony to support the prosecution’s narrative about the Letters of Credit central to the case. When he declined, he alleged Mr Dame reassured him there would be no consequences and advised him to feign illness to delay proceedings — a proposal Mr Jakpa said he rejected.
Mr Dame appeared at the CID headquarters in Accra on Monday morning, accompanied by his lawyers, to respond to the allegations. Police have yet to comment on the outcome of the meeting.
The CID is expected to review the petition, including an alleged recording of a phone conversation between the two men, and take statements from all parties before determining its next course of action.
The ambulance procurement trial, which began in 2022, accused Dr Forson and Mr Jakpa of causing financial loss to the state. The case has drawn significant public and political interest, given its implications for Ghana’s justice system and the independence of the Attorney-General’s office.
Meanwhile, supporters of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) gathered at the Police Headquarters in Accra to show solidarity with the former Attorney-General. Police officers were deployed to maintain order.
