ADDIS ABABA, Oct 1 (The African Portal) – At least 25 people have been killed after a church under construction collapsed in Ethiopia’s Amhara region, local officials say.
The incident happened early on Wednesday at the Menjar Shenkora Arerti Mariam Church, where worshippers had gathered for an annual celebration of St Mary.
A local hospital said the victims included children and elderly people, and that more than 100 others were injured. The facility has appealed for support from the Red Cross.
Authorities have warned that the death toll could rise.
“It is a tragic loss for the community,” said Teshale Tilahun, a local administrator.
