ACCRA, Sept 28 (The African Portal) – The Federation of African University Sports (FASU) has congratulated Ghana’s University for Development Studies (UDS) after it won the 2025 FISU World University Football Cup, the first African university to claim the title.
In a statement on Sunday, FASU described the victory as “a source of immense pride” for Ghana and the continent.
“On behalf of the entire African university sports family, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to you, the University for Development Studies, and the wider Ghanaian university sports community on your historic victory,” the statement said. “This achievement is a source of immense pride not only for UDS and Ghana, but for Africa as a whole.”
UDS were crowned champions after an intense final, a result FASU said marked a transformative moment for African university sport.
The body said the team’s performance showed “athletic excellence” as well as the “strength of leadership at UDS, the unwavering dedication of coaches and players, and the solid backing of the Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA).”
FASU added that the win earned African universities more slots in the 2026 tournament, calling the development “a true milestone.”
