ACCRA, Sept 26 (The African Portal) – Three people have died and four others remain trapped after an illegal gold mining pit collapsed in southern Ghana, a local official said on Friday.
The incident occurred late on Thursday at Twifo Mampong in the Twifo Atti-Morkwa district.
District Chief Executive Isaac Yawson said preliminary investigations indicated the pit belonged to a known illegal miner and that the victims had allegedly entered it at night without the owner’s consent.
Yawson said he had ordered the arrest of the pit owner as rescue operations continued.
Illegal mining, known locally as “galamsey,” has claimed dozens of lives in Ghana in recent years, with poorly regulated pits prone to frequent collapses.
