ACCRA, Sept 22(The African Portal) – The Ghana Police Service has temporarily closed its station at Kukurantumi in the Eastern Region after violent disturbances in the community.
The closure follows an attack by some youth who attempted to set the facility on fire after the death of a suspect in custody.
In a statement on Sunday, 21 September 2025, police said they had obtained video footage of those involved in the attack. “We will arrest and prosecute them,” the statement added.
Responding to concerns raised by the youth, police explained that the suspect, whose name has not been released, became unconscious while in custody and was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His body has since been deposited at the morgue for preservation and autopsy.
“The death of the suspect triggered violent action by some youth, who attempted to burn the station and vandalised sections of the facility,” the statement said.
The Police Service said investigations had begun into both the circumstances of the suspect’s death and the attempted arson.
Authorities assured residents of continued security in Kukurantumi, noting that the Inspector-General of Police had directed the Eastern Regional Command to intensify patrols to maintain law and order.
