LAGOS, Sept 11 (The African Portal) – As the woes of Nigeria’s Super Eagles deepen, frustration is mounting among sports enthusiasts who fear their dream of watching the team compete in the United States or Canada is slipping away.

On Wednesday, the Super Eagles failed to defeat South Africa in their FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, leaving their qualification hopes hanging by a thread.

Some frustrated supporters have resorted to prayers, hoping South Africa will beat Rwanda to revive Nigeria’s chances.

“Nigeria must also secure a superior goal difference in upcoming matches,” a fan told the Nigerian News Agency (NAN).

Many sports lovers believe that the Super Eagles’ draw with South Africa has significantly dented the country’s prospects of booking a ticket to the 2026 World Cup.

Data analyst and football enthusiast Damilola Idris described the 1-1 result as disappointing, stressing that it has seriously weakened Nigeria’s qualifying chances.

He added that while qualification is still mathematically possible, it will now require extraordinary outcomes. Nigeria must defeat both Lesotho and Benin in their remaining fixtures.

Similarly, another fan, Alex Iheanacho, admitted the draw left Nigeria in a difficult position. However, he expressed hope that South Africa could face a three-point deduction for allegedly fielding an ineligible player earlier in the campaign, which might improve Nigeria’s chances.

Dehinde Ogunbiyi of the Lagos State Sports Council told NAN that the match was intense, with Bafana Bafana standing their ground. He emphasized the need for Nigeria to return to the drawing board and put in the hard work ahead of their remaining fixtures.

This article was produced with information from the Nigerian News Agency.
